Casey Abrams, American Idol Season 10's Jazzy Sexy Beast, turned the Idol stage into a cool, smoky Jazz Club to perform "That Old Sweet Roll (Hi-De-Ho)". The theme for the Top 6 Week was "The Music of Carole King". This is a much broader ranging theme than it seems at first, as Carole wrote songs in many different genres. And, the songs of a genius songwriter can be arranged in many different ways...Rock, Jazz, Country, Blues, etc. "Hi-De-Ho" was originally by Carole King, but was made popular by Blood, Sweat and Tears in 1970. Casey "choose a difficult song that takes pure, 100% personality. We had a lot of fun rehearsing this song," Jimmy Iovine said about Casey and Babyface's jam session. "When you have a song like this, the melody is ambitious. So that means every note counts. Casey is the type of artist that thrives living on the edge of creativity. He's always pushing his boundaries. And when you do that, you can fall on your butt, or rise to the heights," Jimmy added.
No worries, Jimmy. Casey Abrams rose to the heights again! And we're not watching American Idol on our TVs, we're sitting in a very hep, dark, smoky Jazz Bar, where Casey is the headliner. Casey is in his element! UM! He's jamming and interacting with the musicians, completely comfortable in his skin. No problem with confidence here. Casey is full of swagger! The hot blonde saxophone player is back...and even she gives it up for Casey at the end of the song. The audience really got into the vibe, and even the three judges were clapping, enjoying themselves.
Randy Jackson raved, "You know what I love, Man, every time you always keep the show different, bring in a different thing. It was like the song was written for you. What a range of songs we got going on here. Scotty doing a James Taylor kinda rendition. You doin' a Jazzy-Bluesy...It took me back to New Orleans, where I'm from. I was like, "This is The Casey Show & Review." I’m excited every time you’re up there, because I know I'm going to see something different and entertaining. I applaud you for that." Steven Tyler added, "Casey, Man, you definitely found your niche. You really work the stage well. It’s the best mother…loving show I’ve seen. It was beautiful. You made my scalp itch, it was so good."
Jennifer Lopez praised "You were definitely in your element with the musicians, playing the piano. The whole thing really, really worked. I’d like to see you loosen up a little bit in your body. It feels like you're holding it in a little tight. Everything is so perfect about you, and you're such a musician, and such a great vocalist with such a special voice. Just loosen up your legs a little bit." (Sorry JLO, not everyone can have those dancing, Latin-Hips like you!) "Less growl," added Randy.
