American Idol's Wild~n~Crazy Casey Abrams "Smells Like Teen Spirit"!

American Idol Season 10's Casey Abrams livens up the Top 12 Show with Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit." This week, Idols were allowed to choose a song from their year of birth. We get to see a video of Casey's "proud older parents"...I want parents like that! They're hilarious! No wonder Casey has such a great personality and sense of fun and wonder! "I think I'm gonna take their whole thing, ya know, and I don't think I'm gonna have a kid 'til I'm like 60. They really know their shit." Casey choose 1991's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana, because "it defined a generation." NO ONE has EVER done a Nirvana song on American Idol. Casey said, "What I really like doing is taking risks musically. I think it plays to my advantage." Idol had some amazing talent last year, like Crystal Bowersox, but Season 9 was rather boring after the in-your-face performances of Season 8's eccentric . Casey Abrams has brought that level of excitement back to American Idol, and each week, we can't wait to see what Casey has for us!

"Smells Like Teen Spirit" is a song by the American rock band Nirvana. It is the opening track and lead single from the band's second album, Nevermind from 1991. Written by Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic, and Dave Grohl, the song uses a verse-chorus form where the main four-chord riff is used during the intro and chorus to create an alternating loud and quiet dynamic. This song with its slurred words but catchy chorus made the band famous over night.

The unexpected success of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" propelled Nevermind to the top of the charts, an event often marked as the point where alternative rock entered the mainstream. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was Nirvana's first and biggest hit, reaching #6 on the Billboard Hot 100. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" received many critical plaudits, including winning two MTV Video Music Awards for its music video, which was in heavy rotation. The song was dubbed an "anthem for apathetic kids" of Generation X, but the band grew uncomfortable with the success and attention it received as a result. In the years since Cobain's death, listeners and critics have continued to praise "Smells Like Teen Spirit" as one of the greatest rock songs of all time.
